My library's book club picked a 900 page monster and half the room quit by chapter 4
I sat in on the Thursday night group at the Riverside branch downtown last week and watched the thing fall apart in real time. The pick was a 900 page doorstop, and the rule was you had to finish it to get a vote on the next one, which felt backwards to me. Four people walked out mid meeting, one lady said she read 200 pages and still could not tell you who the main character was. I think any club that ties voting rights to page count is begging for a mutiny. How does your group handle it when someone hates the pick, do you let them vote anyway?
Watched a similar thing happen at a club I used to go to, except the pick was only 600 pages and people still tapped out by week two. The rule there was you could vote as long as you showed up, done, that was it. One guy hated every book we read and voted no on all of them and honestly nobody cared, because the group kept moving. Tying votes to finishing the book just turns reading into homework with a quiz at the end. Seriously, is a book club a job now? Let people show up, say their piece, and vote, even if they bailed on page 50.
