Vent: My book club's fight over a single chapter derailed our whole month

Last Tuesday, we spent 45 minutes arguing whether the main character's choice in chapter 12 was selfish or justified, and now nobody wants to finish the book. Has anyone else had a group get stuck on one plot point and lose all momentum?

Threw $60 at a used leather bookmark from Etsy and it arrived smelling like a wet dog.

I thought I was being fancy. The listing said 'antique distressed leather' which sounded cool. But when it showed up, it reeked of old basement and something dead. Like, my whole book smelled after one day. Couldn't get the smell out with baking soda either. So now I'm stuck with a stinky bookmark and a book that smells like a thrift store gone wrong. Has anyone else had a random Etsy buy totally backfire like that?

Used to argue it was brilliant for three years until last month when I reread it on a flight to Denver and realized the author just forgot to pay off the setup from chapter two, so has anyone else had to eat crow about a book they swore was genius?

It shocked me because my club reads about 12 books a year and I thought everyone was around that number. Found it buried in a folder labeled 'discussion starters.' The shift in my book club's reading choices over 2 years really bugged me

Back in 2021, my book club in Austin picked mostly literary fiction and classics. We'd argue about themes and characters for hours. Then about 18 months ago, someone suggested a popular thriller and it got 3 new members. Now we're reading nothing but fast-paced bestsellers and it feels like we're just checking boxes. I miss the deep dives into why a character made a certain choice. Has anyone else seen their group slowly change what they read without talking about it first?

That librarian who said 'skip the prologue' was right about one book

Picked up a fantasy novel last month. 500 pages. Started with a 40 page prologue about some war from 1000 years ago. Boring stuff. My friend at the library told me to skip it. Said authors dump too much history there. She was dead on. The actual story started on page 41. Makes me wonder how many books I quit too early because of a bad prologue.

PSA: I wasted $45 on that 'lifetime warranty' book light that died in 3 months

I bought this fancy clip-on book light from a brand that promises it'll last forever (you know the one) for book club late-night reading sessions, and after maybe 20 uses the battery just stopped holding a charge. Customer service said the warranty only covers manufacturer defects, not battery degradation, so basically I'm out the cash and back to using my phone flashlight. Has anyone found a cheap reading light that actually holds up for more than a few months?

Overheard a librarian in Toledo scold a woman for dog-earing pages

I was at the Toledo Public Library last Tuesday picking up a hold, and I heard this librarian absolutely lay into a woman for folding down page corners. The librarian said it was 'destructive behavior that ruins books for future readers.' It made me think about how intense some book lovers get about stuff like that. My old book club fell apart after 8 years together

We had this group that met every third Tuesday since 2016... then it just broke up last month. It started when three members got into a huge fight about whether 'The Goldfinch' was actually good or just long. Then two people moved away within the same week, and nobody wanted to pick a new book. I tried to keep it going by suggesting we switch to short stories, but only one person showed up to the last meeting. It's weird how something that seemed solid can just fizzle out like that. Has anyone else had a group just stop working after years together?

Debate over hardcover vs paperback at my book club ended with a compromise

Our group spent 45 minutes arguing about whether we should only pick hardcovers or allow paperbacks too. I wanted hardcovers because they hold up better when you toss them in a bag, but half the club said they're too expensive at $18 each. We settled on a rule where we do hardcovers for longer books over 400 pages and paperbacks for shorter ones. Has anyone else found a middle ground that actually works for their group?

Unpopular opinion: that book club over in Oakwood was way too picky about page counts

I joined a local book club last month and they refused to even consider anything under 300 pages... called it 'light reading' like that's a bad thing. Then I brought in a 180 page novella that had more depth than the last three doorstoppers we read combined. Has anyone else run into this page-count snobbery in their group?

So for like 2 years in my book club, I would just skim the last few chapters before our meetups to get the gist. I thought it was fine cause I could still talk about themes and stuff. Then last month, someone asked me about a specific scene in chapter 12 of our latest read, and I blanked completely. The whole group just stared at me while I fumbled for an answer, and one lady said 'did you even read the whole thing?' That's when it hit me that I was cheating myself and the group. Sci-fi book I hated turned out to be amazing... sort of

Picked up "The Left Hand of Darkness" for my book club last month and almost quit after 50 pages. The made-up pronouns and slow start felt like a chore. But by the end I was arguing with everyone that it's actually brilliant. Anybody else have a book that flipped on you like that?

I went with the hardcover because I thought it'd feel more authentic, but now I'm lugging this 500-page brick around everywhere and my back hates me. Should I just switch to the Kindle version mid-read or tough it out?

That one Thursday when my book club actually agreed on something for once

We've been fighting about The Goldfinch for like 3 months. Half of us hated how long it was, the other half loved the writing. It got so bad I almost quit the group. Then last Thursday someone showed up with a list of discussion questions she found online, not the boring ones from the book's website. They were about the characters' choices not the plot. For the first time ever we actually talked about why Theo did what he did instead of arguing about page count. It only lasted 45 minutes before someone brought up the bomb scene again but still. Has anyone else had that moment where a single good question saved a whole meeting?

Switched to audiobooks for dense non-fiction and finally finished a book I'd abandoned 3 times

Kept trying to read "The Power Broker" for my club's history pick. Got 50 pages in and stalled out every time. A buddy said try it on 1.5x speed during my commute. Finished it in 2 weeks. Something about hearing the names and dates versus reading them just clicked. Made me rethink my whole "audiobooks aren't real reading" stance. Anybody else have a book that only worked in a different format?

But when we met at Linda's house on Tuesday night, three other people had caught details I completely missed. One guy even found a map online that showed the trade routes we were arguing about. Question about how book clubs changed after going virtual in 2020

My book club met at a coffee shop in Brooklyn every month for 5 years. Then COVID hit and we moved to Zoom. Now in 2025, we still meet online because half the members moved away. The debate is whether the quality of discussion got better or worse. Before, people showed up more prepared and we had deeper talks. Now, more people attend but half are multitasking and the convo gets shallow. Has your club seen a similar shift in participation vs depth since going remote?

Checked out that 'bookstore' in the old church downtown, felt like I stepped into a library from a dream

The place used to be a church till 2015, but the old confessional is now a tiny room just for mystery novels. Spent 20 minutes in there feeling like I was hiding from something.
