Our book club split over a character's 'unforgivable' choice

Last Tuesday at our meetup in the library basement, half of us argued the wife was justified leaving after the camping accident, the other half called her selfish. We got so loud the librarian asked us to keep it down. I kept thinking about the scene where she hides the letter, and it made me wonder if the author wanted us to hate her or pity her. Has your group ever gotten heated to the point where someone almost walked out, and how did you settle it?
