inMy usual mechanic retired and the new guy wrecked my truck's timing
Yeah I used to be one of those people who said "just give the new guy a chance, it's still the same shop" but after reading this I'm rethinking that completely. I always figured family businesses just passed down the same work ethic and knowledge, you know? But it sounds like the nephew didn't learn half of what Mike knew, especially cutting corners on a timing chain of all things. That's the kind of mistake that tells you everything you need to know about someone's priorities. Sorry you had to pay $1,400 to find out what I'm only now realizing from your story.

inVent: An old timer at the co-op told me I was over-torquing my stem bolts and he was right
That old timer Bill sounds like the kind of guy who also knows not to trust the "max fill" line on a car's oil dipstick. It's funny how the right amount is almost always a little less than what the manual says.

inI finally compared ground penetrating radar to old fashioned test pits on a site last month
My buddy runs a crew in Pennsylvania and they tried GPR on a similar 1700s site a few years back. The radar kept lighting up over a bunch of old drainage pipes they didn't know about, so they dug a test pit by hand and nailed the house foundation in one afternoon. He still jokes that a shovel and a sharp eye beat a $20,000 machine any day.

inCan we talk about torque wrenches for lug nuts?
Damn that's rough lol. Sorry to hear your Harbor Freight one snapped on you. I feel like those cheap ones are really hit or miss, especially with the bigger torque values. I had a buddy who bought a $15 one from AutoZone and the needle just stopped moving halfway through tightening his truck lug nuts. Ended up just borrowing mine and never looked back. Definitely one of those tools where spending a little more saves you a ton of headache later.
