Our club in Austin spent 3 meetings fighting over the ending of The Road, and I think the people who hated it just missed the point
We met at a coffee shop on South Congress last Tuesday and the argument got so loud the barista came over to check on us. Eight of the twelve people there said the ending of The Road felt cheap, like McCarthy just tacked on a happy note to a dark book. I pushed back hard on that. The dad dies, the kid is alone, and a stranger shows up with a family. That is not a happy ending, that is a question. The whole book is about whether you keep carrying the fire when everything is ash, and the answer is left hanging there for the reader to decide. My friend Dana said the stranger could be a trap and we have no proof he is good, and honestly that made me doubt myself for a second. But I still say the point is that you have to risk trusting someone, otherwise the whole story means nothing. Anyone else read it this way, or am I the only one in my group who thinks the ending was the strongest part?
