Rant: I picked the 700 page book for book club because everyone wanted short reads and now half of them quit
Last week at our meeting in Denver, 6 out of 9 people voted for a 220 page book while I pushed hard for the 700 page one, arguing that we always pick easy stuff and never actually dig into anything. I lost the vote, we read the short book, and the meeting lasted 25 minutes because nobody had much to say about it, while 3 people who wanted the long book just stopped showing up altogether. So was I wrong to think a book club should sometimes pick something that takes real effort, or should we just keep coasting through quick reads?
