I finally stopped treating my monstera like a succulent

For like 2 years I watered my monstera on a strict schedule, every Sunday, because I thought consistency was key. Then I killed my second one and my sister told me to stick my finger in the soil, which sounds dumb but it was a game changer. Now I only water when the top 2 inches are dry, and my current plant in Portland has pushed out 3 new leaves this month. Anyone else had a weird watering habit they had to unlearn?

My buddy watered his pothos with beer once, thought it was plant food. It died real fast.
