Just lost $40 on a 'rare' philodendron cutting that turned out to be a common pothos.

The seller's blurry photo from a 'local greenhouse' should have been my first clue, but I was too excited about adding something new to the collection.

Been there, done that. Always ask for a clear picture of the leaf stem and the node itself before you pay. Pothos nodes look totally different from a philodendron's. A good seller will send a video if you ask, no problem. If they make excuses, just walk away.

Actually, the node itself on a pothos and a heartleaf philodendron can look pretty similar, it's the petiole (the leaf stem) that's the real giveaway. A philodendron petiole is round and smooth, while a pothos has that grooved, kinda ravine-like edge. Asking for a close-up of that specific part is the best move.

My friend Jake bought a "philodendron" that was just a golden pothos.
