The week I had to rewire a house that was also a cat sanctuary

Got a call for a full rewire on a 1950s bungalow last Tuesday, and the owner failed to mention her 27 cats lived inside. Every wall plate I removed had a stash of cat toys behind it, and I found three live mice in a junction box. The worst part was trying to fish new wire while a tabby named 'Sparky' kept attacking my fish tape. Finished the job on Friday, but my van still smells like catnip. Anyone ever had a job where the 'existing conditions' were a total surprise like that?

Rant: Saw a 'restored' 1920s sideboard at the Portland antique mall with a polyurethane finish

It was a beautiful piece of oak, but they'd coated it in a thick, plastic-looking poly that totally killed the wood's character. The dealer argued it's more durable for modern homes, but I think it's a shame to put that on period furniture. What's your take on using modern finishes on antiques?

A homeowner in Austin pointed out my wire runs were too visible on her new siding.

She said it looked 'tacky' and asked if I could hide them better. Now I always check the exterior finish before I start and plan a cleaner route, even if it takes an extra 20 minutes. Anyone else get feedback that changed a small habit?

Vent: My local library in Springfield has a free coworking space now

Went there yesterday to get out of the house. They have a quiet room with desks, good wifi, and free coffee. It was full of other people on laptops, probably freelancers too. Saves me the $200 a month I was paying for a shared office. Anyone know other free spots like this?

Pro tip: I used to sketch my designs on plain paper, but a friend in my night class said to try a light blue grid pad.

I bought one from the art store for about $12 and it totally changed how I plan my patterns, making everything way more even. Now I can't imagine going back to my old messy sketches. Has anyone else found a simple tool that made a big difference in their early design work?

Unpopular opinion: I think people overhype those super clear, edited space photos

I mean, maybe it's just me, but I feel like a lot of the super popular shots on here are so processed they don't even look real anymore. I tried to get a shot of the Orion Nebula last week with my basic DSLR and a tripod from my backyard in Phoenix. The raw image was just a faint gray smudge, obviously. But when I tried to stack and edit it like all the tutorials say, I just made a weird, blotchy purple mess. I spent like three hours on it and it looked awful. I think there's something cool about a more honest, less perfect photo that shows what you actually see, or what your gear can really get without a ton of work. Everyone seems to want that Hubble Telescope look from their backyard setup, and it sets a weird standard. Has anyone else just given up on heavy editing and been happier with simpler results?

Update: My pellet smoker's auger jammed solid during a 14 hour cook last weekend.

I had to pull the whole thing apart in my driveway at 2 AM, and now I'm thinking maybe the push for 'set it and forget it' tech in BBQ is just making us less able to handle a basic problem when the power goes out or a part fails.

Hit 10,000 bricks laid on a single job site and it felt weird

I was working on that big apartment complex over in Riverside, just keeping my head down and laying block. My foreman told me to check the delivery logs yesterday, and I had personally set over 10,000 units on that project. I always thought counting bricks was just for the office guys, but seeing that number made me stop. It hit me how much physical work goes into just one building. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where the scale of what we do just clicked?
