My neighbor called my compost pile a "dirt mound" and I haven't stopped thinking about it
So my next door neighbor Barb walked over on Sunday while I was turning my compost and asked why I was "messing with a dirt mound." I tried explaining that it's 3 months of kitchen scraps, grass clippings, and shredded cardboard breaking down into black gold for my tomato beds, and she just shrugged and said it looked like trash sitting in the yard. Here's the thing, she's not totally wrong, my bin is just a wire cage in the corner by the fence and it does look rough from the street. But it got me wondering if I'm actually doing this right, because the pile has been kind of slimy and smelling sour since that wet week we had in April. I think my green to brown ratio is off, maybe too many veggie scraps and not enough dry leaves, and I've been lazy about turning it every few days. Does anyone else deal with neighbors who don't get it, and more importantly, how do you fix the smell?
Barb sounds like my neighbor Deb who told me my rain barrel was "a bucket of mosquito water." For the sour smell though, you probably need way more browns than you think, like 3 parts leaves or shredded paper to 1 part scraps, and once I started dumping a bag of shredded Amazon boxes in every time I added kitchen stuff the smell went away in about a week.
