My prized fern took a nosedive after I moved it 3 feet away from the window last week

Turns out that little bit of extra shade was enough to kill off half the fronds in under 7 days, so now I'm slowly moving it back an inch at a time has anyone else had a plant go dramatic over a tiny change like that?

Moving it three feet didn't kill it, you probably just overwatered it in the slightly darker spot.

Did you check the soil before you watered it again? I had a similar thing happen with my snake plant last year, I moved it like two feet from the window and suddenly the soil stayed wet way longer and the roots started rotting. @jana_fox50 is probably right, it's usually the watering that gets them not the spot change. My snake plant is in a kinda dark corner now and it's doing fine as long as I let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Your mileage may vary on that though, some plants are just divas.
