Old field guide trick for identifying saplings in Ohio
Went out to my usual spot near Hocking Hills last spring and kept second-guessing every young tree I saw, since they all look the same without leaves. A buddy told me to check the leaf scars and bundle sheath count instead of the bark, and now I can tell a hickory from an ash in like 5 seconds flat. Anyone else use that method or do you just wait for the full canopy and use an app?

Leaf scars are cool and all, but nothing beats sniffing the bark for that sweet, sweet hickory scent. Just don't lick the ash, trust me on that one.
