Why does nobody mention how oaks fake you out in spring?
I spent the last three weekends at a client's property over in Maplewood and kept telling them their big red oak was dead. It had no leaves, bark peeling, the whole deal. Then last Tuesday I walked by and it had tiny buds all over the top branches. Turns out some oaks hold their old leaves all winter and leaf out late, especially if they got stressed the year before. I felt like a total clown after telling them to budget for removal. This happened twice to me now, once with a white oak near Springfield and again with this one. So how do you tell a truly dead oak from one that's just playing possum until late May? I usually scratch the bark for green, but even that fooled me once on a branch that was alive higher up.
