My aunt swore you could make a decent soup from just an onion and some water, lmao
I was broke last Tuesday and tried it, ended up with the saddest, saltiest broth imaginable. What's the cheapest actual meal you've made that didn't taste like regret?

Tried the same thing and it tasted like salty tears, lol. My go-to is just a can of beans fried up with whatever spices I have left.

Saw a cooking blog once that said a lot of spice rubs go wrong because people add salt before they taste the mix. They said to mix all the dry spices first, then fry a tiny bit in a pan to test it. If it's good, then you add salt. I burned my tongue testing a chili powder blend that way, but it did save a whole batch of chicken from being ruined.

Know the feeling, my last attempt at a fancy spice rub made everything taste like I was licking a pier. Your bean plan is the real winner, simple and never lets you down. I've learned the hard way that my cooking skills are best kept for basic things that can't go wrong. These days, if a recipe has more than five steps, I just close the tab and reach for a can opener.
