My vegetarian neighbor called lentils poor people food and it made me rethink everything

She said she spends $60 a week on fake meat substitutes while I make a week of lentil soup and chili for under $10, and it hit me that budget cooking is seen as shameful instead of smart. Anyone else run into people who think cheap ingredients mean you're cutting corners?

She called it "poor people food" which is kind of harsh but also maybe your neighbor just has weird hang ups about food. It sounds like she's the one who should rethink her spending if she's dropping $60 on fake meat while you're eating well for ten bucks. So your neighbor said something dumb but that doesn't mean budget cooking is actually shameful, some people just have weird ideas about money and food.

My cheap bean soup recipe got called "depression food" by a coworker once, then she asked to borrow twenty bucks the next week. Season your beans right and people will be asking for the recipe instead of making jokes.

Beans are cheap but calling a solid soup "depression food" says more about the person judging it than the recipe.
