A chat with my barista about her side hustle really stuck with me
I was at The Daily Grind in Springfield last Tuesday and my regular barista, Chloe, was telling me about her dog walking gig. She said she puts every single cash tip from that job, which is about $40 a week, into a jar she never touches. She uses it just for car repairs and vet bills for her own dog. It's not a huge amount, but having that specific cash fund has saved her from putting a $300 vet visit on a credit card twice this year. I always tried to save a big chunk of my paycheck and it never worked. Her method of a small, set-aside cash stream for one thing seems way more doable. Has anyone else had luck with a super specific cash envelope like that for an irregular expense?

Oh man, my envelope system is a mess! I tried one for coffee money and just kept "borrowing" from it for snacks. Having a totally separate cash stream like Chloe's sounds way smarter for stuff you can't just skip.

Cash just disappears on me. I have to automate it or I’ll spend it. A weekly transfer to a separate savings account works better for my brain.

Setting aside forty bucks a week is just normal budgeting, not some magic trick. Calling it a "separate cash stream" makes a simple jar sound way too serious. It's just saving with extra steps, lol.
