Last Tuesday I stopped at a Shell in Phoenix to fill up and almost hit confirm on the $75 pump hold. My buddy had mentioned that his card got dinged with a temporary charge that sat there for 3 days, so I checked my balance first and saw I only had $35 available. I put $20 in instead and paid the rest in cash inside. Turns out I had a forgotten auto renewal hitting that same morning, rent, and a phone bill all stacking up. Since then I do a quick balance check before any big purchase, even fast food. Has anyone else had a surprise hold mess up their weekly budget? How do you track pending charges vs. what's actually gone through?
Worth clearing up one thing: that $75 hold at the pump is not the same as money leaving your account. It is a pending charge and most banks drop it once the real amount comes through, usually within a day. The tricky part is your $35 available balance already had those other charges counted against it, so the hold was not really what drained you. What probably got you was the auto renewal, rent, and phone bill hitting the same morning, and the hold just added to the mess. I check pending charges in my app every Sunday night, since pending items show up separately from posted ones and that is the easiest way to see what is still breathing down your neck.
