Pro tip: I put a $50 monthly cap on my business software subscriptions.
I thought it would limit my tools, but it forced me to really check which ones I used every day, and I cut my bill from $180 to $45. The surprise was finding a free open-source option that works better for my bookkeeping than the paid one I had. Has anyone else found a simple spending rule that improved their business?

Oh, the "essential" tool trap. @morganhill, I feel you. My review process is just staring at my bank statement and asking myself, "Did I even open this app last month, or did I just like the idea of it?" Spoiler: it's usually the idea.

Explain how you enforce that cap. Do you just cancel anything that pushes you over, or do you have a review process each month before new charges hit? I tried a similar rule but kept letting "essential" tools slide, which defeated the whole point.

The $180 to $45 drop is wild but I think you mean it went from $180 to $45, not $45 to $180. That's a huge difference though, shows what a simple cap can do.
