Overheard a guy at the lumber yard say drawer slides are overrated

I'm standing in line at the lumber yard near my shop in Raleigh and this older fella in front of me is arguing with his buddy about cabinet hardware. He goes 'drawer slides are overrated, my granddad built drawers that slid fine on just waxed wood rails for 40 years'. I almost choked on my coffee. Look, I get the heritage thing, but I've replaced enough stuck drawers in old houses to know that wax only works until the humidity hits in July. This guy was dead serious though, said he's been doing it for 25 years and never had a complaint. I didn't argue, just paid for my Blum slides and walked out. Has anyone actually tried the waxed wood rail method recently or is that just old timer talk? I'm curious if it holds up in a modern kitchen that gets used hard.
