The day I figured out I was sanding in the wrong direction for 8 years

I always sanded face frames with the grain of the stiles running through the rail joints, thinking I was avoiding cross-grain scratches. Then a guy from a local shop near Pittsburgh watched me for 2 minutes and pointed out my sanding pattern was actually creating tiny dips at every joint. Has anyone else had that moment where some simple habit turned out to be making more work?

Is it really that big of a deal if the wood still looks fine in the end?

At least you only wasted 8 years, not a whole career.
