Thought CNC was cheating until a guy in Fresno showed me his setup
I used to think anyone running a CNC for cabinet parts was skipping the real skill of the trade. Then I visited a one man shop in Fresno who cut all his boxes on a 4x8 machine and he walked me through his tolerances, which held at 0.005 inches on every panel. What got me was his fit on face frames, tight enough that I couldn't slide a dollar bill in the joint. Now I'm pricing a small used machine for my own garage, but I'm worried it'll make me sloppy on hand work. Anyone here made that jump and kept their hand tool skills sharp?
A buddy of mine runs a router all day and still breaks out his block plane every Friday just to true up edges by hand. He says the machine handles the math, he handles the feel.
