I thought those little waterproof match cases were a total gimmick until mine saved a wet weekend in the Adirondacks.
My buddy's lighter failed in a downpour, but the matches from my $8 Coghlan's case lit our stove on the first strike, so what other cheap gear is actually worth its weight?

Ever try those cheap emergency blankets that look like tin foil? They feel flimsy but actually trap a crazy amount of heat. Saved me from a cold night once when my sleeping bag got soaked.

Total gimmick" is what I always thought too, right up until you need one. It's funny how the cheapest piece of kit can become the most important thing you own when everything else fails. I'm now looking at my gear pile wondering what other junk is secretly a hero. Probably that weird little plastic spork.

Funny how that works... it's like the universe's way of reminding us not to judge stuff by its price tag. You see it everywhere, not just with gear. That old t-shirt you only keep for painting becomes your favorite lounge shirt, or the basic free pen that never runs out when the fancy one dies. Makes you wonder what else we're all overlooking because it seems too simple.
