My dad's 1978 Svea stove still fires up on the first try, and my $85 canister stove just died on night 2 in Shenandoah | Camping Gear Reviews - SMM Buzz
The old brass Svea burners were dead simple, no o-rings, no plastic seals, nothing to fail when it gets cold. Your canister stove probably died because the rubber seal shrank or the piezo igniter gave out, and both of those are things that never even existed on a 1978 white gas stove. That's the trade off, right? You carry a little more weight and deal with priming, but the thing will outlive you. My grandpa's Optimus 111 is the same way, still runs like it did in the 70s.
