That Tuesday in March when my $40 thrift store tent out-slept my buddy's $400 one
So back in March me and my buddy Dave drove out to Lost Creek for a quick overnighter, and I brought this old Coleman tent I grabbed at a Goodwill in Tulsa for $40. Dave showed up with a brand new ultralight setup he paid almost $400 for, and honestly I figured I'd be the one shivering. That night it dropped to about 28 degrees and rained sideways for four hours straight, which is pretty rough for Oklahoma in March. Around 2am I hear Dave cussing up a storm because his tent's rainfly was letting water drip right on his sleeping bag, while my cheapo tent was bone dry inside. Turned out his fancy tent had a seam issue from the factory and mine just happened to be built solid. The next morning he's wringing out his bag and I'm making coffee feeling weird about the whole thing. I know one good night doesn't prove much, but it really made me think about how much we trust price tags. Anybody else had a cheap piece of gear bail you out when the expensive stuff failed?
