Took me 4 trips to REI to figure out my stove was fine and my fuel was the problem
So I bought a canister stove in March for a trip to Big Bend and it kept dying on me at camp. I figured the stove was junk, so I swapped the burner, then the hose, then the whole stove. That ate up 3 weekends and around $90 in parts I did not need. Turned out the real issue was the cheap fuel canisters I grabbed from a discount bin in El Paso. The mix was too much butane, and once it got cold at night, pressure just fell off a cliff. A ranger at the basin actually watched me fight it for 10 minutes and said to try an isobutane blend instead. Bought one canister for $9 and the thing ran perfect at 28 degrees. Now I want to know, does anybody here check the butane to propane mix before they buy, or do you just grab whatever is on the shelf?
Oh man, I used to just grab whatever canister was cheapest and never thought twice about it. Then I got burned on a cold trip in the Smokies and now I actually flip the canister over to check the blend before I pay. That butane thing is no joke once the temps drop.
