Deleted my apology post for a bad take and watched the hate triple overnight

I tried keeping quiet instead of doubling down on a wrong opinion about that influencer drama last Tuesday, and learned that silence just makes everyone assume the worst about you, so has anyone else had a cancel mob get worse after you stopped engaging?

Did you actually try talking to people one on one instead of just going silent? That worked for me when I pissed off a bunch of locals over a shitty take on city council stuff. I messaged a few of the loudest critics directly, apologized without excuses, and asked what they needed from me. Most of them calmed down real quick when it was a real conversation instead of a public feeding frenzy. You can't fix it in the main thread once the mob forms.

I mean, sure, if you want to skip straight to the "alright, I messed up, what now" part instead of getting roasted for three days straight. That's like showing up to a fistfight with an olive branch instead of a chair. But hey, if it worked for you, maybe it's worth a shot. Though honestly, I'd probably just end up in a group chat where they're all just "wait, he's actually talking to us now?" and then ghost me harder.
