Saw someone get canceled for a 6 year old tweet and I finally got why it bugged me

I was scrolling through the drama around this small YouTuber who got called out for a tweet from 2018 last week. Everyone was piling on saying she was trash and should lose her sponsors. But I actually dug into the tweet myself because it felt weird. It was a joke about pineapple on pizza that some people twisted into being about cultural appropriation. I spent like 20 minutes reading the whole thread and realized nobody even clicked the link to see the original context. The tweet was clearly from a silly debate with her friends not some big statement. I know people mess up sometimes but when did we stop checking the actual source before yelling? Has anyone else noticed this trend where a quote gets shared without the full story and then everyone just runs with it?

@morgan.logan that's the thing though, my friend Sarah dug up a tweet from a comedian she used to like and it was literally just her saying "this coffee is terrible" but someone screenshotted it and claimed she was making fun of baristas. People just saw the screenshot and ran with it, never looked at the replies where she was clearly joking with the coffee shop owner. Wild how fast stuff spreads without anyone checking.
