Heard a guy at the coffee shop say he turned down a job because the title was wrong

I was grabbing coffee yesterday and overheard two people talking. One guy said he got offered a 'Marketing Coordinator' role, but he asked for it to be changed to 'Marketing Specialist' before he would accept. He said the pay was the same, but the 'Specialist' title would look better on his resume for his next move. It made me stop and think about how much weight we put on job titles now. I always just looked at the money and the work. Has anyone else made a choice like that, where the title itself was a deal breaker?

Wait, is that a normal thing to do now? I mean, I get it though. Last year I almost didn't take a side gig because they called it an "assistant" role when I'd be running the whole project. It just felt like they were downplaying the work, you know? Even if the money was okay, it makes you worry about how it looks later. Maybe it's just me but titles have gotten so picky.

My cousin did that with a 'lead' versus 'senior' title last year.

Yeah, titles are so weird like that... my friend's company just made up a whole new "principal" level that no one really gets.
