Question about the endless wait for promotion decisions at my company
I mean, idk maybe it's just me but at my last job, I was in line for a promotion for about half a year. They kept telling me the choice was coming soon, but every week it got pushed back. I had to handle more tasks without any sure answer. It seemed like they were checking how long I could wait. When they finally said no, I had already started searching for other positions. This whole situation showed me why clear deadlines matter in career moves. Now I always request exact dates when talking about job steps. It has helped me avoid a lot of worry in my new place.

Actually, from my experience, having strict deadlines for promotions can backfire because management might feel pressured and make hasty choices. I've seen cases where rushing the process leads to picking the wrong person, and then everyone suffers. It's better to let things unfold naturally, even if it takes time, because it shows the company is being careful. Sure, waiting sucks, but sometimes the extra responsibility you handle during that period proves your worth more than any title. Pushing for exact dates might make you seem like you're not a team player, and in the long run, flexibility can pay off.

Totally get what @lisaf38 is saying about rushing, but no timeline at all is just management being lazy. People need a clue.

But I've seen the opposite happen too. What if management just keeps delaying with no plan? Isn't it fair to want some idea of when things might move forward? Without any dates, people can feel stuck and not sure if their work is even noticed. A loose timeline doesn't mean rushing, it just means being clear. How is that not being a team player?
