Unpopular opinion: that $500 career coaching program was a total waste
I spent $500 on a 6-week career coaching course last year and all they did was tell me to update my LinkedIn and network. Has anyone else actually gotten real value from those things, or is it just me?

My buddy Mike dropped $400 on one of those programs and the coach told him to "just be more confident in interviews." Mike is a guy who once talked his way out of a ticket by explaining the history of the turn signal to a cop. The only real value I've seen from those things is the free pizza they sometimes hand out at the intro sessions. But hey, maybe I'm just bitter because I paid $50 for a used book on networking and it basically said the same stuff in half the pages.

Five years ago I signed up for a mock interview thing and the guy spent twenty minutes telling me to "stop fidgeting" which is rich coming from someone who couldn't stop checking his phone. @lilykelly I feel you on the smile thing, my resting face got me a concerned follow-up email from HR once. Gavin is absolutely right that the free pizza is the only real perk, I still have that used networking book sitting on my shelf too.

Ugh, YES, same here! I paid for one of those and the coach literally told me to "smile more" on Zoom calls, which is hilarious because my resting face makes people think I'm about to fire them.
