Wasted $800 on a resume writing service and got zero callbacks
I thought paying a pro would fix my job search, but they just reworded my old resume with fancy buzzwords. After 3 months of silence, I rewrote it myself in a weekend and got an interview the next week. Anyone else fall for these services?

Haha oh man, that's rough but honestly not surprising. The thing nobody talks about is these services don't know your industry's quirks or the actual hiring managers you're dealing with. They just template everything to death. Plus, they can't sell your personality or the small details that make you stand out over someone with the same degree. You rewrote it yourself and got traction because only you know what really matters in your field.

A buddy of mine spent good money on one of those services and they swapped out all his industry terms for generic corporate speak. The hiring manager at his company actually called him to ask if he was applying for a completely different role elsewhere. He had to explain it was the same resume. @troy832 is right, templates can't capture the inside jokes or specific project wins that make interviewers sit up. My friend ended up rewriting it on a Sunday afternoon and got three call backs the next week. Sometimes you just have to trust your own gut over a stranger's formula.

My buddy paid like $400 for one of those services and they changed his "managed a team of 12 welders" to "oversaw a group of manufacturing associates." His boss literally thought he was applying at a call center. I don't know who these companies hire but it feels like they just run your resume through a buzzword generator and call it done. Total waste of cash if you ask me. You're better off asking someone in your actual field to look it over than trusting some random template farm. The whole thing is basically a scam that preys on people being stressed about job hunting.
