DAE think the 'just get certifications' advice is setting people up to fail
I work at a mid size IT shop in Columbus and we hire a lot of entry level help desk folks, and I keep seeing the same pattern. People come in with an A+ and a Network+ and a Security+ stacked up like poker chips, and they can't talk through how they'd actually troubleshoot a printer that keeps going offline. I sat in on 6 interviews two weeks ago and 4 of them had 3 or more certs and zero stories about fixing anything real. One guy had a cloud cert and couldn't explain what a subnet was when I asked him to walk me through his home setup. The certs aren't worthless, but they're being sold as a shortcut and they're not one. What actually got people hired here is a story about a broken thing they fixed, even if it was just their mom's laptop or a home lab they blew up twice. I'll take the person who broke their own network and figured it out over the person with the stack of papers every single time. If you're grinding certs right now, what's the last thing you actually fixed with your own hands, and could you talk about it for 10 minutes straight?
