My brother said the PCT is overrated and I think he's right

We were talking about our trip next year and he flat out said 'Everyone wants the Pacific Crest Trail because of a book and a movie, but you're just walking in a line with thousands of people.' He's done the Colorado Trail and the Wind River High Route. He said on those you actually have to plan, pick your own way, and you see maybe a dozen people a week. It hit different because I've been saving for the PCT for three years, but he's right. It's become a social media checklist item, not a real wilderness trip. The permit system is a fight, the popular camps are crowded, and you're never alone. I'm rethinking the whole plan now. Has anyone else switched from a famous long trail to something more remote and been happier for it?

My sourdough starter went absolutely feral after I left it on the warm stove by mistake for 3 hours.

I came back to find it had climbed out of the jar and was dripping down the cabinet, but that wild energy made the best loaf I've ever baked, with a crust that actually crackled. Has anyone else had a kitchen disaster turn into a secret win?

My neighbor in Phoenix watched me struggle with a fence post for 20 minutes before saying anything.

I was trying to set a 4x4 cedar post in concrete for a new backyard fence. The hole kept collapsing in the dry, sandy soil. After watching me from his porch, he walked over and said, 'Kid, you're fighting the dirt. Wet it down first, pack it in layers.' He showed me how to pour a gallon of water into the hole, let it soak, then tamp the soil before adding the concrete mix. It worked perfectly and saved me a ton of backfill mix. Anyone have other tricks for setting posts in really sandy ground?

Found a way to keep my mortar from setting up too fast in the sun

Last week on a job in Tucson, the afternoon mix was drying out before I could even lay a full brick. I tried adding a little bit of dish soap to the water, maybe a capful per batch. It kept the mix workable for almost 20 minutes longer in that heat. Has anyone else tried something like this, or do you have a different trick for hot weather?

The day I realized my chalk line was costing me hours

Was laying a herringbone pattern in a big kitchen and my lines kept drifting. The homeowner, a retired engineer, pointed out my chalk box spool was bent, putting down a wobbly 3/16-inch curve I couldn't even see. Anyone else have a simple tool failure that caused a major headache?

It was during a supposed 'chill Q&A' from their kitchen, but they forgot to end the stream after taking a call. Has anyone else seen a social fail that was just painfully real like that?

Heard a guy at the tool crib talking about his scrap rate

Honestly, I was grabbing a new end mill yesterday and this older operator was telling the crib guy his scrap was under 1% for the month. Ngl, I always just focused on cycle time and hitting my numbers. He said he checks his first part against the print with calipers three times, not just once. So this morning I tried it on a run of 50 aluminum brackets. Caught a 0.005" depth error on the third check before it ran. Has anyone else found a simple step like that that saved a whole batch?

Okay, I need someone to explain this 'I'm just a girl' meme format to me

I keep seeing it everywhere, like a video of someone doing something complicated with the text 'I'm just a girl' over it. Saw one yesterday of a person rebuilding a car engine with that caption. I don't get the joke... is it making fun of something? I tried looking it up but just found more examples, no explanation. Has this always been a thing or did it start somewhere specific?

My blog's 'Ask Me Anything' thread just hit 500 questions and I'm torn between feeling proud and overwhelmed.

On one side, it's awesome people trust me enough to ask that much, but on the other, I'm worried the quality of my answers will drop if I try to get to them all, so what's better: answering every single one quickly or picking the best ones for a thorough reply?
