PSA: I flipped on job hopping after seeing a 2023 BLS stat that the average person stays at a job 3.9 years
I always figured jumping ship every 18 months or so was the fastest way to move up, and I stuck with that for my first four jobs out of school. Then a mentor in Austin pulled up the Bureau of Labor Statistics page during a coffee chat last month and showed me the median tenure number is actually 3.9 years, with workers 55 and over averaging over 9 years at one place. That made me rethink the whole thing, because the folks I know who stayed put 5 plus years at my company got the training budget and the internal promotions I kept missing. Curious if anyone else has seen longer stints pay off more than quick jumps, or if I just got lucky with the mentor I talked to.
