The 30-day notice myth is costing people their references
Everyone keeps saying give a full 30 days notice to leave on good terms. I did that at my last job in Austin and my manager spent three weeks trying to talk me out of leaving. By the time I actually walked out the door, she was annoyed and my reference call came back lukewarm. Two weeks notice would have been cleaner and kept things professional. Has anyone else had a longer notice period backfire on them?
The "30-day notice myth" part is a little off. There's no rule that 30 days is the magic number for a good reference. Two weeks is the standard, and in most states at-will work means you can leave whenever. What actually tanked your reference was your manager spending three weeks pushing back, not the length of the notice. A shorter window gives them less time to make it weird, which is basically what you already figured out.
