Lesson learned from my failed outdoor bench with reclaimed wood
I built a garden bench last year using wood from an old barn. It looked rustic and nice at first. I did not check the wood for moisture or treat it. After a few weeks, the wood started to warp badly. Then cracks appeared all over the seats. I found out that reclaimed wood can hold water and hide bugs. Now the bench is shaky and not safe to use. Always dry and seal reclaimed wood well before using it outside. Do not make the same mistake I did.

Trapped moisture, not insects, is what usually warps reclaimed wood.

Something else to check is where in the old barn the wood came from. @paige86 is right about trapped moisture being the main issue, but wood from a barn roof or siding spent decades getting soaked and dried in the sun. That stuff is way more stressed than interior posts or floorboards. Those roof boards might look solid but are already primed to twist wildly when they get wet again. It's not just about drying the wood now, but knowing its past stress.

Those barn boards I got last year had more beetle holes than moisture. The insects weakened the structure way before any warping showed up.
