Stopped by an old hardware store in rural Pennsylvania last month

I was driving through Lancaster County and saw this old hardware store that still had a hand-painted sign out front. Walked in and the place hadn't changed since the 1970s - dusty wooden floors, a giant brass cash register, and barrels of nails you could buy by the pound. The owner was maybe 80 years old and he still sharpens handsaws on a vintage grinding wheel out back. I asked him about his dovetail chisels and he pulled out a set that his father had made by hand in the 1940s. It got me thinking about how much we rely on fancy power tools now when these guys did everything with sharp edges and good technique. Has anyone else come across an old-timer like that who taught you something simple but valuable?

Five generations of hand tools in one family. Makes you wonder what we'll pass down.

That's a really good point Margaret. My grandpa left me his old wooden plane and I still use it on almost every project. It's weird to think about what people will want from us in fifty years, digital files just don't have the same WEIGHT as a tool someone's hands shaped for decades.
