Vent: Paid $150 for a verified blue check package and got suspended for impersonating myself

I fell for one of those official looking Twitter verification ads that popped up after a celeb I follow got hacked. Sent $150 and my login details to what I thought was the real support page. Next thing I know my account is suspended for impersonation and I'm out the money. Had to jump through hoops with actual Twitter support for 3 weeks to get it back. Has anyone else been tricked by these fake verification scams?

Not to defend the scammers or anything (they're awful) but I wonder if Twitter's whole verification system is so confusing that they're basically asking for this to happen. Like, they make it so hard to tell what's real and what's not.

Wait, has anyone else actually looked at what they call verification now? I got a blue check myself and honestly the whole process was a mess. They kept changing the rules every few months so I had no idea if I was getting verified or just paying for a feature.
