Our move from the suburbs to Logan Square changed how we grocery shop

Back in Naperville, we drove to a big supermarket once a week and loaded up a cart for two weeks at a time. After moving to Logan Square last March, we started walking to small markets every other day because the fridge in our vintage apartment is tiny and the car is parked three blocks away. Has anyone else found that their shopping habits completely shifted after moving to a denser neighborhood?

Three trips a week to small markets sounds exhausting to me. I did the same thing when I lived in a walkable area for two years, and I honestly got sick of it. The tradeoff was that I ate a lot more fresh stuff, but I also paid more and ran out of basics like flour or dish soap at the worst times. Now I'm back to a weekly Costco run and I'd pick that over carrying bags three blocks in January every single time. Different strokes for different folks, but big shopping trips save me way more than just money.
