Talked to an old timer who said I was brushing too fast
I ran into a guy who's been sweeping since the 70s at a job site last week and he watched me work for 10 minutes before saying anything. He told me I was moving the brush too fast and missing the fine creosote buildup near the flue liner joints. Has anyone else slowed down their stroke and noticed a real difference in how clean the chimney comes out?

Slow and steady really does make a difference with heavy buildup. Fast strokes just push the looser stuff around and let the sticky creosote stay put. I watched my dad sweep for years and he always said the brush needs time to scrape, not just skim. Have you tried going back over a spot you thought was clean?

Old timer doesn't mean he's right about everything. A lot of those guys have their own little rituals that don't really change the outcome. Fine creosote near the flue liner joints is more about the brush head and the rods than the speed of your arm. I've done both fast and slow strokes and ended up with the same amount of dust in the tarp. Maybe your sweep just got some extra dirt that day.
