Hot take: I switched from recycling to composting after my city's pickup schedule changed
I used to think recycling my cans and cardboard was the best thing I could do each week. Then a neighbor in Austin told me about a free compost drop off at the farmer's market on Saturdays, and I gave it a shot. After two months, I was hauling less to the curb and my trash bin stopped smelling like old fruit. The compost pile at the market takes coffee grounds, eggshells, and even pizza boxes, stuff my recycling guys always left behind. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has tried a shared compost setup and what they wish they knew starting out.
The "my trash bin stopped smelling like old fruit" part is the real win here because who knew composting was also a way to make your garage not smell like a dumpster in July. My buddy did the same thing at his local market and his only regret was not getting a countertop bin with a lid sooner, since the smell before drop-off day is no joke. The pizza box thing still blows my mind though since my city won't touch greasy cardboard with a ten foot pole.
