My whole block's power went out for a day and it made me realize how much we waste
We had to cook everything in the fridge on the grill, used candles, and talked to neighbors instead of watching TV, which showed me how much energy our normal 'standby' life uses without us even noticing, so has anyone else had an outage that changed their habits?

Our last outage just made me grumpy and cost me spoiled food. I don't see it as a lesson, just a hassle that set me back. I'm happy to get back to my normal, convenient life.

Man, hearing you call it just a hassle that set you back really misses the point. That grumpy feeling and the lost food are the exact lesson, showing how fragile our normal life actually is. Getting back to convenience without a second thought means you'll be just as upset next time it happens. Maybe being a little less comfortable and more ready is better than getting knocked down over and over.

You're saying being less comfortable is better, but that sounds miserable. Most outages are just a few hours, not some big disaster. I'd rather enjoy my normal life with working power and a full fridge than live in constant worry about what might go wrong. Spending money on extra gear or time on prepping for rare events is a waste. Getting grumpy and replacing some milk is way easier than turning your whole life into a drill for problems that almost never happen.
