Showerthought: my compost bin went 3 days without a lid in July and the lesson cost me one very gross afternoon

I left the lid off my backyard compost bin in Sacramento during that 104 degree week, came out to maggots and a smell that reached the fence line, so I dumped the whole 30 gallon pile into a tarp, added two buckets of dry leaves, turned it every other day for a week, and now it's back to sweet dirt, but has anyone else had fruit flies swarm a pile that fast and did laying burlap over the top help or just trap the stink?
