The auto parts store parking lot fixed my tool offset issue

I was fighting a nightmare part at the shop in Columbus last Tuesday, inserts wearing uneven and my finish looking like garbage. I ran out for more coolant and saw this older guy loading a pallet of brake rotors into a truck, and he was just sliding them onto a steel rod to keep them stacked. It hit me right there that my boring bar holder was set up wrong, I had the tool sticking out way too far and it was flexing under load. I rushed back, reset the offset to 1.2 inches of stickout instead of my usual 3, and the chatter disappeared completely. I spent 2 hours overthinking a math problem when the fix was just looking at how someone else balanced a load. Weird where answers come from, right? Anyone else have a random real world sighting completely fix a setup problem for you?

Tbh that brake rotor thing makes total sense. I had a similar moment watching a tow truck driver chain down a car last winter. He had the straps crossed at a weird angle and I realized my lathe steady rest was fighting itself, same kind of crossed force thing. Moved my support point closer to the chuck and the whole setup stopped vibrating. Honestly it's wild how often the answer is just watching someone do something simple way better than you've been overcomplicating it.
