Blew $80 on a fancy brush pack that made my art look WORSE

I saw this big set of Procreate brushes advertised as 'professional grade' and paid $80 for it. Thought it would help me get that polished look I see in other artists' work. Instead, every stroke came out too textured and messy, like the brushes were fighting against my style. I ended up going back to the default round brush that came with the app for free. Has anyone else wasted money on a brush set that just didn't work for how you paint?

Swapped out daily coffee shop runs for a french press last month

I was spending like $60 a week at the local roaster downtown, and now I'm at like $18 for a bag of beans that lasts two weeks. The press was $25 on sale and honestly the coffee tastes better. Has anyone else had success switching up one daily habit like that?

Talked to a tower crane guy at the union hall and it got me rethinking ground ops

He said ground crews are the real weak link in most picks, not the operator... told me about a job in Detroit where the signal person kept giving him wrong hand signals because they were too new. Makes me wonder if we focus too much on the crane itself and not enough on who's below it... anyone else ever deal with a green ground crew that made a simple lift sketchy?

Had to pick between PPG and Sherwin-Williams clear coat on a resto job last month

I was doing a 1967 Mustang resto for a client and had to choose between PPG Deltron and Sherwin-Williams's new line of clears. PPG laid down way better right out of the gun, no fisheyes or orange peel to fight. Sherwin-Williams took three tries to get a smooth finish and still had some dust nibs I had to buff out. Has anyone else dealt with Sherwin-Williams clear coat being finicky like that?

Hot take: that viral comment about "gaslighting" in every recipe post is getting old

I was scrolling through a banana bread recipe last week and saw a comment claiming the baker was gaslighting readers by saying 3 ripe bananas instead of 4. Come on, people. I've been in enough dentist office waiting rooms to know real manipulation when I see it, and it's not about a missing banana. The wildest part was 200 people agreeing with the commenter, and the actual baker had to respond saying she just had small bananas. Now every cooking video I watch has someone yelling "gaslight gatekeep girlboss" in the comments over any tiny detail. Has anyone else noticed this trend of armchair psychology taking over food posts?

Chat with an old school butcher made me rethink my knife setup

I was breaking down a beef quarter at a local shop in Portland last Tuesday and this guy who's been in the trade since the 70s watched me for a minute. He told me I was using way too much knife for the task, like I was grabbing a cleaver for everything. He showed me how he switches between a thin boning knife and a stiff one depending on the cut, and told me I was wasting energy fighting the wrong blade. Honestly, it hit different because I've been doing it the hard way for years without even thinking. Has anyone else had an old timer drop some simple advice that messed with your whole routine?

I finally saw the stone tool marks on an old wall in my hometown

Last weekend I was visiting my parents in a small town in Ohio and walked past this old limestone building I've seen a hundred times. Up close I noticed these perfect parallel grooves in the stone that looked just like the chisel marks from a documentary I watched about ancient quarrying. Has anyone else started spotting old tool marks on buildings after getting into archaeology?

Lost my Wi-Fi signal in a coffee shop in Barcelona and almost lost a client

I was working out of this cafe in the Gothic Quarter last month and my hotspot just died right in the middle of a Zoom call with a client in New York. Turns out I was sitting in a dead zone behind a giant stone wall. I grabbed my bag and sprinted to a coworking space 3 blocks away, got there in 10 minutes, and logged back in. Client was cool about it but now I always scout a backup spot before I start work. How do you guys handle internet backups when you're bouncing between cities?

My first Python program actually worked on the third try

I've been learning Python for about 3 weeks now and last Tuesday I finally got my little calculator program to run without any errors. It just adds two numbers together, but seeing "Enter a number" pop up on my screen made me so happy I actually cheered. My cat looked at me like I was crazy. Has anyone else had that moment where something simple clicks and it feels like a huge win?
