Debugging at 2am in a coffee shop or at my desk with full focus which way works better

I was sitting in a crowded Starbucks last Tuesday trying to fix a loop that kept crashing my program. The wifi was lagging and someone kept dropping their cup lid, making me lose my train of thought. After 2 hours I got nowhere and just closed my laptop. Next day I set up at my home desk with no distractions and found the bug in 10 minutes, it was a misplaced colon. So which environment helps you code better as a beginner, the noisy real world or a quiet setup?

Does the coffee shop noise actually help you focus or is it just the vibe that feels productive? I found that when I'm in a loud place my brain splits its attention too much and I miss simple stuff like spelling errors. Quiet space lets me actually hear my own thoughts which is pretty critical when you're just starting out.

Oh man, this is such a good point and I haven't seen anyone bring up the actual science of background noise levels. It's not just about loud versus quiet, it's about the volume floor of the space. A coffee shop with a low, steady hum of chatter and clinking cups can actually mask sudden distractions like a neighbor's tv or a car honking, which makes your brain less likely to jump to alert mode. The problem is when the coffee shop is actually too loud or has unpredictable noises like a blender or someone laughing loudly, then it defeats the purpose entirely. So for me, it's about finding a place where the background noise is consistent and low enough to blend into the background, not just any old bustling spot. Have you tried different coffee shops with different noise levels to see if that makes a difference?
