Had to pick between a $300 grinder and a trip to the new cafe in Portland

I was saving up for a new Baratza grinder, but my friend said we had to check out this new place called 'Steam & Steam' in Portland. I picked the cafe trip, thinking I'd just get a good cup. Ended up with a $12 pour-over that tasted like burnt toast water. Anyone know a good spot in Portland that's actually worth the hype?

Saw a review that called Steam & Steam "aggressively average." Spot on. Felt like they roasted the beans into dust. @daniel_lane30 gets it, some places just miss. You should try Proud Mary on Alberta. Their single-origin pour-overs are a totally different world, way more balanced. Not cheap, but you actually taste the notes they talk about.

Wait, they actually called it "aggressively average" in a published review? That's brutally honest, I love it. Roasting beans into dust is the perfect way to describe that burnt, bitter taste some places have. Proud Mary is a serious step up, you're right about the price but it's worth it for coffee that good. Makes you wonder how some shops stay in business.
