My uncle in Tucson swore by a pinch of salt in the grounds before brewing, and after ignoring him for years, I finally tried it last weekend and my morning cup was noticeably smoother (less bitter, I mean).
Has anyone else tried this weird little trick, or is there another oddball tip that actually works?

Oh wow, I need to try that! My coffee's been tasting a little harsh lately.

Harsh coffee is the worst. I switched to a medium roast from a dark and it made a huge difference. Also, check your water temp. If it's too hot, it burns the grounds. A cheap kitchen thermometer saved my morning cup.

Yeah, the pinch of salt thing is wild. My buddy swears by a tiny bit of cinnamon in the grounds, which sounds just as weird. AliceCooper is right about water temp too, that's a game changer.
