Swore I'd never do decaf after 5pm, caved at a diner in Tulsa and now I get it
For years I treated decaf like a betrayal of everything coffee stands for, so I'd just slam a second mug at 7pm and lie awake till 2. Last Friday at a diner in Tulsa the waitress talked me into their Swiss water decaf because they'd run out of the regular, and I slept like a rock for 9 hours. Honestly the flavor was flat compared to my usual medium roast, but that sleep was worth way more than the buzz. Anyone got a decaf that doesn't taste like wet cardboard?
Swiss water process is the way to go for sure, but the bean itself matters more than people admit. Most decaf tastes like nothing because they use cheap robusta and burn the hell out of it to hide the loss. Try a decaf that starts as a decent single origin, like a Colombian or Ethiopian, and you'll be shocked it's not the real thing.
