Warning: the $15 scale I bought to weigh beans changed how I brew more than the $200 grinder did
I was eyeballing scoops for a long time and getting cups that swung between sour and bitter. Last month I picked up a basic kitchen scale for $15 and started weighing 18 grams of coffee to 300 grams of water, and the same bag of beans finally tastes the same every morning. The grinder upgrade I saved up for did help, but the scale is what made it repeatable. Anyone else find a cheap tool beat an expensive one for dialing in a recipe?
Check your water weight again, because 18 grams of coffee to 300 grams of water is closer to a 1:17 ratio, and most people pulling a balanced cup land nearer 1:15 or 1:16. That small gap can be the whole reason a cup tastes thin even when your beans are ground right. Try 18 grams to 270 or 288 grams of water once and see if it tastes fuller.
